Listening is more than just hearing the words that come out from a person’s mouth. It also involves understanding what the person is talking about. Having good listening skills is an important skill that any person should have.
These skills must be developed even at a young age. Preschoolers can get opportunities to improve their listening skills both at home and in a Child Care Centre in Pasadena, Maryland.
What Processes Are Involved in Listening?
There are three processes involved. These include hearing, which is the process of receiving the sound and sending it to the brain for processing; listening, which is the process of interpreting the sound; and attention, which is the process of hearing and listening to sound at sustained time periods.
What Can Parents Do?
At Severna Park Children’s Centre, Inc., we want to help holistically develop preschoolers into future good citizens who know how to listen. Here are suggested ways on how you can nurture the listening skills of your little ones:
- Read interactive stories.
Read books to your little ones even when they are still inside the womb. At that point, they are already capable of hearing sounds. Read stories as often as you can, with the most common time being bedtime.
Make the stories interactive. This means that you tell the story and let your children give you ideas on how it will end. They can also try to retell the story, checking if they really were listening and comprehending the narrative.
- Help them follow instructions.
Preschoolers will be receiving instructions from adults in any place they may be including the home and a Daycare Center in Pasadena, Maryland. When providing them with instructions, encourage them to repeat the instructions back to you. They can only follow your instructions if they understand them.
- Let them identify different sounds.
The world offers a lot of sounds coming from different sources. Your little ones should have the ability to recognize different sounds. You can help them identify a variety of sounds through games. For instance, let them guess what a particular sound is while their eyes are closed.
We are a Learning Center in Maryland dedicated to helping you in your children’s overall growth and development. Enroll your young ones in our programs today!
