Encouraging Good Reading Habits at Home

Encouraging Good Reading Habits at Home

We can’t force children to like a certain activity. There may be something else they would rather be doing besides reading. However, we need to remind them that reading is not only for getting good grades in school, but for academic success as well. Severna Park Children’s Centre, Inc. gives students activities that enhance their reading abilities, but how can this habit be carried over at home?

Our child care centre Pasadena Maryland is here to give you a few tips on how to encourage and reinforce good reading habits in your child. Take a look:

  • Create a designated reading area.

Make it cozy and fun so your child will enjoy opening a book or two in their past-times.

  • Be a role model.

Children in our learning center Maryland are always encouraged to read, but your child will be more inclined to follow your example. So crack open a book or magazine and invite your child to read with you.

  • Talk about what they are reading.

Strike up a conversation about the book your child is reading. Ask them what their favorite parts were or what they learned.

  • Associate reading with relaxation.

Read a bedtime story every night and have your child help you. This helps them associate reading with relaxation.
